When You Should NOT Convert HEIC to JPG

Converting isn't always the right move. Keep the original HEIC file instead of converting when:

  • You're staying inside Apple's ecosystem - iPhone, iPad, and Mac all read HEIC natively, so there's nothing to gain by converting.
  • iCloud storage space matters to you - HEIC is roughly half the size of an equivalent-quality JPG, so converting your library can meaningfully increase your iCloud usage.
  • The photo is a Live Photo, Portrait Mode shot, or has an HDR gain map - the extra motion, depth, or tone-mapping data attached to these is dropped when exporting to JPG.
  • You're still editing the photo - convert only at the final export step, not before, to avoid extra lossy re-compression along the way.
